Gentlemen - I have a '99 Lexus RX300 that exhibits an electrical issue or two. First - When I open either front door, the door step lights do not come on. The bulbs appear fine. On the driver side door, the dome light does not come on when the door is opened. Dome light comes on when all other doors open. The dome light comes on when the keyless remote unlock is activated (good sign). Strangely, when I remove the driver side door step bulb, the door open beeper? starts beeping. Otherwise, I never hear from it. Second (and I assume this is a result of the first problem), I have three keys - One "master" that all functions work (key & remote o.k.), one "master" that only works as a manual key (remote not working), and one "Valet" which works as intended. I have tried to program the remote of the second key w/o success. It has a new battery of course. Any advice or insight would be appreciated. I suspect that a sensor in the driver door has developed a problem? Door lock activation on driver door seems a little sluggish at times from remote or arm rest master button.

Ok first things first. When dealing with electrical problems we need to deal with one known bad or in op system at a time. If one is related to another is a possibility but will need handled when it comes up. There is no easy fix for what you are describing in the above description of events.

With all of that being said lets give it a whirl!!

(When I open either front door, the door step lights do not come on.)

I am attaching a wiring diagram DOWNLOAD it. There are door pin switches that need check for continuity. As you can see from the diagram it is going to get complicated. each door has an ecu that detects and reports too the body ecu by way of the MPX wires. Each door has a boot that goes from the door to the body. In this boot are the wires that control the switch functions especially the drivers door. Check the wires in the boots especially the drivers door. I have seen wires break in there and cause all kinds of problems.

(On the driver side door, the dome light does not come on when the door is opened. Dome light comes on when all other doors open.)

This sounds like a door pin switch on this door.

(The dome light comes on when the key less remote unlock is activated (good sign).)

This happens because the body ecu controls this feature not the doors or door switches.

As far as the keys you can have the trans matter signals checked at the dealer. Make sure the batteries are good.

(Door lock activation on driver door seems a little sluggish at times from remote or arm rest master button.)

The door lock motors do go bad occasionally but normally don't affect other things. If it is binding or not functioning normally it would be a good idea to replace.

Good luck I hope this helps shed some light on your situation.

A little follow-up... When the door step bulb is removed on the driver side, the dome light works as it should and the beep of key in the ignition with the door open sounds. I will start troubleshooting why the door step lights do not function. The 2nd master key remote programing issue is a minor one and we'll cross that bridge later. Thanks again. - Todd
